Voluntary: A Sweet Touch for Modern Editorial Design

Choosing the Right Font for a Wedding Planning Guide

I recently began working on a downloadable wedding planning guide for a small content brand focused on sustainable celebrations. The goal was to create a soft, approachable layout that felt personal and inviting. When I reached the typography stage, I wanted a font that could carry the warmth of handwritten notes without sacrificing legibility or editorial polish. That’s when I found Voluntary.

What Makes Voluntary Stand Out

Voluntary is a handwritten script font that exudes charm and approachability. It’s not overly formal like some calligraphy styles, nor is it too casual like a scribbled note. Instead, it strikes a perfect balance—sweet, friendly, and just a little whimsical. This makes it ideal for projects that need a touch of personality without veering into childish or unprofessional territory.

Its character rhythm feels natural, almost like someone carefully writing out a message with a felt-tip pen. There’s a gentle bounce to the baseline and soft curves that give it a warm, human feel. It doesn’t demand attention—it invites it.

Using Voluntary in Real Editorial Layouts

In the wedding guide, I used Voluntary for section headers and pull quotes. It worked beautifully in both digital and print formats. On screen, the font remained legible even at smaller sizes, especially when used in bold or paired with a clean sans serif. In print, its texture added a tactile, personal quality that readers responded to positively.

Here are a few other ways I’ve seen Voluntary shine:

Typography That Builds Visual Hierarchy

One of the biggest challenges in editorial design is creating a clear visual hierarchy that guides the reader through the content. Voluntary isn’t meant for long-form body text—its personality is best reserved for accents, titles, and quotes. But when used thoughtfully, it adds a layer of emotional tone that helps readers connect with the content more deeply.

For example, in a newsletter header, Voluntary can serve as a memorable brand marker. Paired with a clean, readable sans serif like Lato or a classic serif like Georgia, it creates a contrast that’s both visually appealing and functional.

Font Pairing Tips for Editorial Design

When pairing Voluntary with other typefaces, consider its rhythm and mood. Since it’s a script font with a relaxed personality, it pairs well with:

  1. Serif fonts for body copy (think Times New Roman or Playfair Display)
  2. Sans serif fonts for captions and navigation (like Open Sans or Roboto)
  3. Monospaced fonts for tech-related design accents (Courier New or Fira Code)

This kind of pairing helps maintain a balance between personality and readability. Voluntary sets the tone; the secondary font keeps the layout grounded and functional.

Readability Across Mediums

It’s important to test how a font performs in different formats. Voluntary holds up well on screen, especially in larger sizes and bold weights. For mobile layouts, I recommend using it sparingly—perhaps only in cover graphics or newsletter headers—to avoid overwhelming smaller screens.

In PDFs and printables, Voluntary adds a human touch that digital fonts often lack. I’ve used it in printable planners and coaching worksheets, where its soft curves and organic feel help reduce the clinical edge that some design templates can have.

What to Check Before Using Voluntary

Before licensing Voluntary for your next project, make sure to review the following:

Many premium fonts come with robust features and licensing, but it’s always best to double-check, especially if you’re distributing the font in a downloadable product.

When to Use Voluntary—and When Not To

Voluntary excels in decorative accents, cover text, and pull quotes. It’s not ideal for long-form reading or small captions. Its strength lies in its ability to add warmth and personality to a layout without being distracting.

If you’re designing a digital magazine, try using Voluntary for article titles and sidebar highlights. For a course PDF, it works well in section headers and motivational quotes. In a creator newsletter, it can be a signature element in your header or call-to-action buttons.

Designing with Intention

Choosing a font like Voluntary is about more than aesthetics—it’s about creating a reading experience that feels intentional and human. Whether you’re building a printable planner, a wedding guide, or a digital magazine, thoughtful typography can elevate your content from functional to memorable.

Next time you’re working on a layout that needs a soft, friendly touch, consider how Voluntary might bring warmth and personality to your design. Paired with the right secondary font and used in the right context, it can become a key part of your brand identity and editorial voice.
